김정현 사진전 <Trees>
나는 세상에 존재하는 모든 것이 하나의 진리로 이루어져있다고 믿어왔다. 그리고 그 진리의 출발점을 음양오행에서 찾아 보고자 했다. 예를 들어 밤과 낮, 삶과 죽음, 빛과 그림자가 그러하다. 흥미로운 사실은, 음과 양은 서로 상극이며 상생이라는 절대불변의 법칙에 따라 서로 밀고 당기며 이 세상에 공존하고 있다는 것이다. 반대로 말해, 음과 양의 균형이 무너지면 존재하는 그것은 사라지는 것과 같다라는 게 나의 철학이고 믿음이다. 음과 양의 조화로 생성되어지는 사진의 이미지는 이런 나의 믿음을 가장 잘 표현할 수 있는 매체이다. 다시 말해, 사진은 빛(+)이 지나간 흔적(-)을 보존()하여 음양이 공존한다는 나의 믿음을 뒷받침 해 주고 있는 것이다. 이 빛의 흔적(Photo-Graphy의 원 뜻)을 일차적으로 보존하고 있는 것은 네거티브 즉, 음화이다. 나는 이 음화 상태를 하나의 포지티브 이미지로 해석하여 작업을 진행하였다. 왜냐하면 나는 음화 자체가 바로 진정한 음양이 공존하는 상태라고 믿기 때문이다. 그 예로, 빛이 지나간 부분은 화학반응을 일으켜 변화하고, 빛이 지나가지 않은 부분은 변화하지 않는 상태가 되는 것, 그 둘이 동시에 존재하는 곳, 그것이 음화 상태인 것이다. 게다가 야간에 플래쉬를 이용하여 촬영한 나의 이미지들은 그 믿음을 배가 시킨다. 빛이 닿는 부분과 그렇지 않은 부분이 확연하게 들어 나기 때문이다. 그렇게 촬영된 포지티브 이미지들을 반전시켜 네거티브 이미지로 되돌려 음화상태로 만든다. 그럼으로써 반전된 이미지들은 음과 양의 정보를 동시에 공유하게 된다. 나의 믿음처럼 말이다. 게다가 나의 주 대상인 나무는 음과 양의 화합과 균형을 보여주는 최고의 모델이라고 할 수 있다. 지구에 존재하는 대부분의 나무들은 자웅동체의 특성을 가지고 있다. 한 몸에 서로 다른 두 개의 성이 존재하여 균형을 유지하고 조화롭게 공존하는 것이다. 그들의 변화무쌍한 4계절의 모습 또한 음과 양의 이치를 잘 보여준다. 새로운 생명이 탄생하는 봄과 세상을 싱그러운 녹색으로 물들이는 여름, 낙엽이 떨어지는 가을과 앙상한 가지만 남는 겨울이 그러하다. 이렇듯, 나무는 내가 말하고자 하는 음과 양의 공존과 화합을 표현하는데 가장 적합한 모델이다. 음과 양은 땔래야 땔 수 없는 상호 보완적 관계에 있는 근본적 진리인 것이다. 이 진리는 나의 작업의 지침서이며 철학이고 믿음이다. 이렇듯, 사소한 진리에서 시작한 나의 작업은 음과 양의 균형이 이루어 지는 과정에서 보여지는 여러 형상들을 카메라에 담아내는 일이다. -김정현
I really believe one thing that everything existing in this world follows a truth. It is (+) and (-) begin and end together at the same time. And I wanted to find it out through Ying-Yang theory. For example, night and day, life and death and light and shadow. What I am interested in is their relationship. They subsist and follow in an inevitable fact that they are incompatible and complementary each other. In other words, if the balance between them are ruined, it could be the same as everything is destroyed. It is my philosophy and what I believe. Thus, photography is the best medium to express my belief. Again, photography as medium supports my idea because it basically preserves a trace(-) of light(+) in negatives so that negatives hold them at the same time and same place. Moreover, use of a flash in night doubles my belief because it is so clear to recognize a trace of the light in negatives. Also, trees are the best models to show me the harmony of +and – because most of them in earth are monoecism. In other words, two different genders keep the balance and support together in one body of tree. Their incredible changes through four seasons definitely sustain my belief too. Ying-yang theroy roles a main actor in my work and it is a certain fact to me. It is my guide, philosophy and belief. Somehow, it could be so flat or common or boring subject matter to some people but to take a picture of an endless process drawing their harmony makes me realize what life really means. - Stone Kim
